Course Title: Medical Surgical Nursing part I
Course description
This course is designed to orient the junior nursing student to the nature of professional nursing, its history, and professional roles, also provide the student with knowledge and skills, and positive attitude required for providing care to clients, families and society. This course enhances communication skills, interpersonal relations of student nurses and makes them effective members of the collaborative health care team. This course has a unique emphasis on effective critical thinking and decision making skills as a guide for a safe, competent and skilled nursing practice.
Course objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Assume responsibilities for learning by active participation in teaching-learning process.
2. Describe the historical development of the nursing profession in terms of theory, practice, education and research.
3. Identify the needs of adults.
4. Discuss factors affecting needs satisfaction.
5. List the roles of the nurse in the maintenance, promotion, and restoration of health and prevention of illnesses throughout the life span.
6. Demonstrate critical thinking skills in addressing nursing subjects
7. Develop knowledge, positive attitudes, and behaviors in accordance with the professional codes of ethics, standards of care, and patient's rights.
8. Explain the process communication & the use of problem solving technique in developing nursing care to individuals and families
9. Discuss nursing theory related to charring
10. Describe essential aspects of the comforting process
11. Discuss meaning of stress and coping
12. Differentiate the terms concept, conceptual frame work theory, paradigm and meta paradigm for nursing
13. Identify the purposes of nursing theory in nursing education, research, and clinical practice
14. Discuss the skills and attitudes of critical thinking
15. Identify the elements of critical thinking
Course policies:
1. Students are expected to prepare for lecture by reading assigned materials.
2. Attendance of lecture is a requirement and students should be on time student who miss more than seven lecture hour without excuse will be dismissed from the course.
3. Student should be dressed in the assigned dress code.
4. Students unable to take the scheduled exam should follow the proper university regulation otherwise he/she will get zero in their exam.
