Medical Surgical Nursing Course
Course description
This course introduces concepts related to the nursing care of individuals with acute and chronic alterations in health. Emphasis is placed on utilizing the nursing process as a framework for providing and managing nursing care to individuals along the wellness-illness continuum. Upon completion, students should be able to apply the nursing process to individuals experiencing acute and chronic alterations in health. It will help students to develop advanced skills for nursing interventions in various conditions: caring for critically ill patients, understanding in the field of Orthopedic, Urology and Neurosurgery.
General objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Recognize health alterations and principal manifestations of common health.
2. Disorders in the adult and elderly clients.
3. Utilize the nursing process in assessing, planning, implementing and follow up care of the patient with acute and chronic health disorders (Preoperative Management, Cardiovascular Disorders, Respiratory Disorders, Oncology and Burn).
4. Learn the appropriate terminology related to disease processes and clinical manifestations.
5. Understand factors related to the disease processes, diagnostic, evaluation. Medical management and nursing interventions of common health disorders.
6. Utilize critical thinking skills while applying the nursing process to make safe and accurate clinical judgments during the delivery of care to clients in the acute care setting in today's heath care system.
7. Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients with urological, orthopedic and neurosurgical condition.
8. Perform neurological, renal and musculoskeletal assessment.
